EVERYTHING IS STORY

Matter Level is a storytelling studio and object shop for feeling our messy, mesmerizing world, built by multidisciplinary artist and creative director Scotty Gunderson.

Together with a community of collaborators, we find the story beneath the surface and give it form: visual identities, storylines, narrative decks, campaigns, films, worlds to experience, live performances, objects to hold. We've made work for everyone from a drag queen and her funk band to a team of lawyers at the UN.

We make our own projects and objects, and we build the same way for clients and partners across commerce, culture, art, and social impact.

  • What We Know

    Everything around us—our juicy armpits, a tide pool of technicolor slugs, a gay bar filled with kisses and gossip, the Earth’s churning core—is in constant motion, turning and evolving. Stories are how we make sense of it.

  • What We Build On

    Our studio name draws from Matter Level Perspective (1923–27), a hand-drawn visual poem by the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven—the Mother of Dada, a radical shapeshifter who moved as her poems do: through matter, spiraling into life, art, and spirit.

  • ABOUT SCOTTY

    Scotty Gunderson is an artist, creative director, and producer whose work spans film, performance, bookmaking, installation, and more. He got his start behind a homemade puppet theater, staging Jerry Springer brawls with Carol Burnett timing. He has spent two decades creating his own work and helping others discover what matters most in their story.
